After spending 100 hours with The Binding of Isaac creator’s new cat-breeding roguelike, Mewgenics, it’s no surprise to me that it’s the highest-rated game of 2026 so far.
It's the first game to score 90 or above this year
Mewgenics, the quirky cat-breeding roguelike from the creator of The Binding of Isaac, is the first game of 2026 to earn scores in the 90s on both Metacritic and OpenCritic.
After 13 years since its initial announcement, Mewgenics has finally been released. Despite facing a cancellation and a reboot during that time, it has somehow managed to meet both the high expectations built over the long wait and the challenge of following one of the best roguelike games ever made, The Binding of Isaac – which, as it turns out, was apparently just the developers experimenting with roguelikes before creating Mewgenics.
