METRO 2039 is here

The next chapter in the Metro universe has officially been revealed. This new game is set six years after the original story. It was written with help from Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the Metro books.
The game stays true to the series by focusing on a deep, single-player story. It features a dark, scary atmosphere that makes players feel trapped and on edge.
Welcome to Metro 2039.
This is the darkest chapter in the Metro series yet.
While the last game, Metro Exodus, took place outside of Moscow, Metro 2039 returns to the tunnels. It focuses on what fans love most about the series. In this world, survivors of a nuclear war live underground to stay alive.
Now, all the groups in the tunnels are ruled by one leader: a famous soldier named Hunter. He calls himself the "Fuhrer" of a new empire. While he promises a better life, he actually rules through fear, lies, and strict control. The people suffer under his cruel motto: "If it’s hostile, kill it."
The new main character is The Stranger. He is a loner who is haunted by scary dreams and speaks for the first time in the series. Even though he promised never to go back, he is now forced to return to the Metro.
The first trailer shows one of his nightmares, filled with scenes of pain and violence. When he finally wakes up, he realizes his real life is just as bad. He must travel through the ruins of Moscow to face his past.
Metro 2039 will be the darkest story yet. It shows the sad and difficult choices people must make just to stay alive.

The new video shows a small taste of the gameplay and scenes you will find deep in the tunnels.
A big part of Metro 2039 is "frozen stories." This means the rooms and levels are designed to tell a story without using words. If you look closely at the items and bodies in a room, you can figure out what happened there.
In the video, the main character, the Stranger, escapes a scary mutant called a Nosalis. He runs into a crowded station, giving us a look at how people live underground. These stations are grim places where communities do whatever they can to survive.

Just like the earlier games, Metro 2039 is built on a special engine made specifically for this series. This allows the team to use everything they have learned while adding new features.
With Metro Exodus, the developers were among the first to use ray-tracing—a technology that makes lighting look more realistic and moodier. For Metro 2039, they have rebuilt this tech from the ground up. The goal is to make the game run smoother while still looking beautiful and haunting.
Ukrainian Pride
The team is very proud to reveal the new Metro game today. As a studio based in Ukraine, the creators spent the last few years working under very difficult conditions. Many team members had to hide from drone strikes and use batteries or generators just to keep working.
Additionally, the author Dmitry Glukhovsky is living in exile. He was sentenced to eight years in prison in Russia for speaking out against the invasion of Ukraine.
The war in Ukraine has changed how the team approached this game. While the Metro series has always been about trying to stop war, this new story is told from a unique Ukrainian point of view. The themes focus on the results of war: the danger of staying silent, the horrors of cruel leaders, and the high price of being free.
