Intel's New Gaming CPUs Are Its Fastest, And Cheapest

Intel is making a strong play to regain its lead in the desktop market with the newly announced Core Ultra 200S Plus series (also known as the "Arrow Lake Refresh"). These chips focus on two things: significantly better multi-core performance and much lower prices to compete with AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series

The new Core Ultra 200S Plus series is effectively a "reset" for Intel’s desktop lineup. By increasing the core counts and aggressively slashing prices, Intel is offering flagship-level specs for mid-range costs.

The new chips arrive in stores on March 26, 2026. Here is the simple breakdown of why these two chips are changing the market:

Core Ultra 7 270K Plus ($299)

This is the "star" of the launch. It has the same 24 cores as the previous $589 flagship (the Ultra 9 285K) but for half the price.

  • Performance: Intel claims it is 15% faster in games than the older Ultra 7 265K. In some specific games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the boost is as high as 39% thanks to new software optimization.

  • The Rival: It is aimed directly at the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X. While AMD is still very efficient, Intel’s extra cores give it a massive 90% lead in heavy tasks like video editing or 3D rendering.

Core Ultra 5 250K Plus ($199)

This is designed to be the new king of "budget" gaming builds.

  • Specs: It jumps from 14 cores up to 18 cores.

  • Performance: It is roughly 10% faster in games than the previous i5 model. Because of the extra efficiency cores, it actually performs similarly to much more expensive CPUs from last year.

  • The Rival: It competes with the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X. At $199, it is one of the cheapest 18-core processors ever released.

Intel’s internal testing across 38 different games shows that these new "Plus" chips are roughly 15% faster than the previous Arrow Lake models at 1080p. In some specific titles, like Hitman 3 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the jump is even higher, reaching over 20%.

While AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X was slightly faster than Intel’s older chips, this new Core Ultra 7 270K Plus might finally tip the scales back in Intel's favor depending on which games you play.
